I Want It To Be Me
I was driving to work one day in January 2006, wishing I was heading anywhere else.  I was not excited to be driving the same old street to the same old job, but it had to be done, so I did it the same way I did it most days.  Then the radio played an old song that I had not heard or even thought about in years.  It’s really not important what song it was, but it made me think of my carefree youth when my life was basically all still before me.  It brought back a flood of memories and feelings and I was struck by the fact that a simple song could cause such a reaction.  I basked in the feeling for a while as I continued to drive.  Then, I really got excited as my mind caught hold of the thought that music could do this – and this was the reason I loved music so much – because it can transform people, or at least play a motivational role.

Somewhere, someone will write a song tonight...
A songwriter, properly armed and inspired, could cause positive ripples and even waves in the otherwise conventional ponds of life. Why doesn’t someone really harness this power and use it for good? Well, of course many already do. But could someone do it better? Is there someone out there that could actually effect a global change in people by creating musical harmony? Who could ever do that? As I took an honest peak into my heart and soul, I confirmed my suspicion that, though the odds are stacked highly against it, I want it to be me.

I Want It To Be Me
By Michael D. Squires

I’m driving down the same old street that leads to the same routine,
Where stress and expectations meet; it’s a road that we’ve all seen.
Then from the radio in my car comes a song from many years back
And sends my mind to an innocent time before I got off track.

Then the current chapter in my life is left there where I’m sittin’
Giving way to an earlier time, before so many pages were written;
When the world was waiting there, and I knew I could do no wrong.
Now those feelings return to me, because of a four-minute song.

Somewhere someone will write a song today, that reminds us who we are;
And leads us to a better place that suddenly just doesn’t seem so far.
Someone combines the words and chords that connect just perfectly.
Someone can change the world through music – Who will that someone be?
I want it to be me.

I recall the time we danced; remember that time we laughed,
When we walked, we talked, we drove; it’s the music that takes me back.
I recall the friends that were there, the goals that we achieved.
I remember the feelings I had when a melody was first received.

The songwriter has a matchless power to bring us harmony;
To help us look inside our hearts and see our possibilities.
We don’t know what a weapon we wield, with the music that we conceive.
It can make a lasting difference in us, when it causes us to believe.

Somewhere someone will write a song tonight, that reminds us who we are;
And leads us to a better place that suddenly just doesn’t seem so far.
Someone combines the words and chords that connect just perfectly.
Someone can change the world through music – Who will that someone be?
I want it to be me.
