Through the Eyes of a Child
My daughter, Ryann, started piano lessons in September 2006 not long before her seventh birthday. Ryann is a timid and a sensitive spirit, to put it mildly. Her piano teacher was wonderful, but at the first lesson it was a struggle just to get my daughter to sit down to the piano with her. By normal standards, the half-hour lesson was not at all successful, but because she did eventually actually sit down at the piano with her teacher, I declared it to be moderately successful.
After the lesson, we had some time to kill before we had to pick up Rachel with Nicole from violin practice. We stopped in at the stake center and slipped into the primary room. I sat down at the piano while Ryann drew on the chalkboard. I was a little frustrated from the piano lesson experience (probably because Ryann’s actions and attitude reminded me greatly of mine when I was her age). I wanted to play something new and different and meaningful. Some chords came out and I began to play them over and over.
Ryann must have liked them, because when I looked up, she was out dancing in the middle of the room, attempting to create her own choreography. As she danced and I played that evening, I was struck by how quickly the world of a child changes. Here she was dancing and laughing and smiling and pretending as if she was the freest spirit on the planet, while not fifteen minutes earlier the slightest hint of enjoyment was out of the question. Sometimes I think it is important to be reminded of what the world looks like through the eyes of a child.

Through the Eyes of a Child
By Michael D. Squires
It was the first day of school, Her eyes were on the verge of overflowing. We assured her she would be just fine, But she had to take the step without knowing. She hugged us and reluctantly let go, And timidly she found her way… Later, she danced around the living room, As she told me about her day. It was the biggest thing in her life, To face her fears and hope it comes out all right. Through her young eyes it overwhelmed everything, But through this song, may that message be seen… Through the eyes of a child. It was her first time at the piano, And she was scared about how things would go. Her kind teacher tried to reassure her, But her young heart was about to lose control. Finally, with child-like faith she sat down, And timidly she began to play… Later, she danced around the living room As she told me about her day. It was the biggest thing in her life, To face her fears and hope it comes out all right. Through her young eyes it overwhelmed everything, But through this song, may that message be seen… Through the eyes of a child. Let that innocent dance be seen through all your life; There’ll be times when you’re out of step, but that cannot dim your light. May we have an understanding heart as we help you through; Your problems may seem simple to us now, but we were once children, too. Now it’s the biggest thing in our life, To give you faith that it will work out right. Through your young eyes it can be overwhelming, But through this song, may the truth be seen… Through the eyes of a child.
