The Sunniest Place on Earth
Guinness shows Yuma, Arizona as the “sunniest place on Earth.” This could be construed as a negative during the long, hot summers, but it is also a big part of what is attracting so many to this spectacular desert home. I thought there should be a song to observe this appealing quality.  This is a fun song to play and improvise with.  This little border-town by the Colorado River was a huge part of my life and the lives of my family for more than twenty years, and I hope this song properly offers some form of tribute to it.
The file below was the first recording that I did with my meager limited home equipment, but it includes some great harmony that I thought was worth including.  I realize the quality may not be entirely adequate (this is not to say that with the best equipment my voice could be more than adequate), but I wanted to include it nonetheless.  Maybe the future will bring some better recordings taht do it justice.

Here in Yuma, it’s gonna’ be another sunny day...
This song also conjures up some rich Yuma history.  On August 24, 1949, two brave men, with help from the entire Yuma community, took to the skies attempting to break the world's record for continuous flight in a single-engine airplane named appropriately "The City of Yuma."  They wanted to prove to the military that Yuma has the best year-round flying weather in the world.  On October 10, after 47 successful days and with the new world's record secured, "The City of Yuma" safely touched down.  Yuma has been flying pretty high ever since.
"You can come and fly in a clear blue sky, at the sunniest place on earth..."

The Sunniest Place on Earth
By Michael Squires

The sun rises o’er the Foothills, sending greetings our way;
The winding river is inviting, ‘cause here in Yuma it’s gonna’ be another sunny day.

It’s the sunniest place on earth. Here we know what daylight’s worth.
You can come and fly in a clear, blue sky at the sunniest place on earth.

The possibilities are endless, when there’s sun in the sky.
Yes the heat can be relentless, but here in Yuma that heat is always gonna’ be dry…

Cause it’s the sunniest place on earth. Here we know what daylight’s worth.
You can come and fly in a clear, blue sky at the sunniest place on earth.

The sun sets beyond the sand dunes—and end to work and play;
But tomorrow holds promise, ‘cause here in Yuma, there’s always another sunny day…

Cause it’s the sunniest place on earth. Here we know what daylight’s worth.
You can come and fly in a clear, blue sky at the sunniest place on earth.

It’s the sunniest place on earth. Here we know what daylight’s worth.
You can come and fly in a clear, blue sky at the sunniest place on earth.

Here in Yuma, it’s gonna’ be another sunny day.
